1. What is Shingles?

It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), and after the primary infection causes chickenpox, it lies dormant in the sensory ganglia. When the immune system is weakened by stress, the virus that has been hidden in the nerves resumes its activity and causes shingles. Tingling pain on one side of the body followed by a red rash.

The incidence of herpes zoster in Japan is about 5 per 1,000 people per year, but it tends to increase with age, and the incidence rises sharply after the age of 50.
