Introduction to Nephrology

1. What is Nephrology?

Nephrology is a branch of medicine that specializes in diseases of the kidney. The kidneys are also called the “silent organ,” and symptoms may be less likely to occur.

The kidney is an organ that produces urine to excrete fine waste products in the blood to the outside of the body, and works like a filter to remove waste products from the blood. When this function declines, it falls into chronic renal failure, and treatment called dialysis becomes necessary. Patients with chronic kidney disease are also at increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, angina, and myocardial infarction.

It is important to have regular urinalysis through physical examinations, etc., and if there are any abnormalities in the urinalysis, do not leave it unattended and consult a nephrologist for early detection and appropriate treatment.
